Some other places beyond the Graveyard also become available for development. For example, the overlay to examine the grave sites and determine what to do with them only appears when the Keeper is among the graves. The overlays generally only appear when the player character is at the relevant places. For this purpose, the game makes use of overlays with their own set of controls, in order to give the player the means to dictate what goes where. Thus, the graveyard and its estate can be managed in any way that the player wishes, though eventually almost all amenities would have to be unlocked and made available for use in order to reach the end-game. Furthermore, as details in the Ancient Contract would reveal, no one other than the Keeper would have any oversight over the Graveyard. It is not exactly a strategic location, however few people have reason to the Graveyard and the places beyond it. It is situated to the west of the Village, to the east of the Swamps and southeast of the mountains. The Graveyard Keeper’s living address is of course the Graveyard. The Graveyard Keeper has to befriend others, who so happen to have what he needs to achieve his quest. Incidentally, this is where the game’s Story of Seasons-styled storytelling would come into play in the gameplay. Thus, he begins his quest to gather the means to do so, despite being quite clueless about what to do. The protagonist so happens to be the latest person that has been chosen for the job.Īlthough he is eventually informed of this, the protagonist is determined to be reunited with his lover by whatever means necessary. The office of the Graveyard Keeper is the guarantor of a contract of sorts, and it must be occupied in order to prevent the chaos of a zombie apocalypse. (Later expansions to the game also reveal that his memories have been selectively wiped too.)Īfter some advancements in the story and some gameplay tutorials, the player would learn that he is in a medieval world with some form of poorly understood magic. The player would be just as bewildered as he is, because there is no expository introduction to the reality that he has been sent to. Instead of an afterlife, he has been drawn into another reality to be appointed as the next titular Graveyard Keeper. Rather, the protagonist – a heavily bearded Caucasian male – has just died in a car accident. Unlike other Story of Seasons-type games, Graveyard Keeper does not have a protagonist that has moved into some rural area because that person wanted to. Fortunately, Graveyard Keeper would be one of these. However, having an engaging story and having the story engaged with the gameplay are two different things the better ones of these games have both. For one, most gameplay features will not be available until the player has reached certain milestones in the story. Like most other Story of Seasons wanna-bes, Graveyard Keeper has its gameplay intertwined with its story-telling. That’s a kind way of saying that one is quite dead. Thus, Graveyard Keeper would stand out from among these games, if only because there is an objective that would end a playthrough when it is achieved. After that, the player has to depend on near-irrational doggedness to continue playing lacking that, boredom quickly sets in. Consequently, the gameplay in these games is somewhat open-ended the player can plod along, unlocking gameplay elements and advancing any side stories until there is no more to discover. Typically, games that are styled after Story of Seasons (or Harvest Moon for that matter) has the player character leaving something behind to start a new life with no particular end-goal.
